November Calendar
From the
Pastor's Study....
Dear
Church family,
We
are in the middle of Lent, getting ready for the events of Holy Week.
Our theme for this Lent
is "Walking to.........Walking with..........Walking through". As we
journey through Holy Week, we walk to
Jerusalem with Jesus, we walk with him in his last days before his
death on the cross at Calvary, and we walk
together through his suffering to the glory of Easter morning. We
all know the promise and joy that comes to
us as Christians because of that first Easter morning. Please
join us for worship this special time of the year.
I
would like highlight some church happenings this past month:
- Many of you have asked for copies of our 2009 spending plan. Copies
are now available in the Gathering
Area, or you may call the church office and have a copy mailed to you.
-The consistory of NHRC held a weekend-long retreat early in March. The
title of the retreat was "Playing
a Bigger Game". What does a 'bigger game" look like for our church? One
of the common themes of the
weekend was "Connections" -- making connections with God, with each
other, and with the larger community.
More discussions will be held, and the whole congregation will have an
opportunity to hear more. The date will
be determined.
-Thank you to all who supported our "Sunday with Daffodils." 85
bouquets, and 85 plants of daffodils graced
our sanctuary on Sunday, March 15th. We raised close to $1880 for the
American Cancer Society.
-During Holy Week this year, we will have an opportunity to walk our
Circle of Life Labyrinth before and after
our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. (Weather permitting).
There will be more information in your
morning bulletin.
-Below is our April Worship Schedule.......See you in worship
In Christ's Service,
Rev. Keith W. Tamlyn, Pastor

STRESS....
We all need a certain amount of stress in this life to function at our
best, but when the
balance tips toward prolonged stress, it can take a terrible toll on
our minds, bodies,
and spirits over time.
Physical Symptoms of Stress
· sleep problems; chronic fatigue; lack of
energy or stamina
· anxiety or depression; unexplained crying
· shaking or trembling; dizziness
· difficulty concentrating; nervousness;
restlessness
· heart palpitations; chest pain; headaches;
difficulty breathing; upper and lower back pain; stomach problems
· lack of interest in sex (if you are in a
relationship)
· decrease or increase in appetite and eating,
with accompanying weight loss or gain
If any of the above symptoms are a regular feature of your life, and
other possible physical causes
have already been ruled out, consult your physician and begin to take
steps to manage and eventually
eliminate unhealthy sources of stress in your life. Consider joining us
for the following supper program
on Friday evening, April 24th, with our own Corrie Blasi, M.S.W., as
facilitator, to learn more about
stress and how to manage it...it could be the first step to improve and
change your life!
RELAX !!! STRESS MANAGEMENT COMING

Update
Longevity.........
Several years ago, Dinner for Eight (or less in number) groups were
formed. Groups of eight or
less got together and one family would host the event and the entree
and the other families brought
appetizer, dessert, etc. Carol DeWoody organized all the groups. The
groups would meet 3-4x a year.
A big thanks to Carol for organizing and coordinating these groups and
" hosting" the idea of many years ago.
My husband, Keith, and I joined a group tha,t instead of hosting the
meal within the home, went
outside the home to local restaurants.
Keith is now in heaven but our group has continued over the last 4-5
years. I think we are the longest
surviving NHRC dinner group and the only one who ventured outside the
home.
I thank God my dinner group has continued to allow me to a part of the
dining experience and has
continued to be a source of strength and fellowship to me. We
have experienced many different types of
food and restaurants, both ethnically and culturally. It has
enlightened our culinary taste buds!
My group consists of Jim and Carol Ray, Joe and Sally Allen, and Walt
and Barbara Weikel.
Speak with any of us, and will we share our group experiences with you.
In the meantime, you may want
to form a group on your own either to dine within your home or outside
your home. We have built a
strong Christian community together over the "breaking of bread".
It builds community amongst us.....Our Lord was always building
community over a meal or two.
Community builds faith and faith builds hope in a Christian community!
Breaking bread together,
Jan Fritzinger

Sunday School Lenten Mission - Children helping children through change
- Cassandra is 7 years
old. She loves to play with Barbie, ride her bike and go swimming. Jose
is 14 years old. When he
is not helping his mom with his younger brothers and sisters, he loves
to eat pizza, skateboard and
play video games with his friends. Cassandra and Jose are exactly like
all children, except for one
thing, they are homeless. They live in a homeless shelter in our
neighborhood. This year's Sunday
School Lenten mission project invites our children to collect coins to
help fund summer activities for
Cassandra, Jose and upwards of 100 other homeless children living right
here in our community. The
Sunday School children have received change banks that they will
present on Palm Sunday,
April 5, 2009. We would like to invite the whole congregation to
connect with our Sunday School
program in this worthwhile endeavor. If you have a jar, bottle or
pocketful of change that you would
like to offer to this cause, you are welcome to leave it with myself or
Bill Hawlk at the education desk
any Sunday morning, all shapes and sizes of containers accepted! Any
way you can help our children
help other children through change is so appreciated!
VBS - Save the dates! - This year's Vacation Bible School, Crocodile
Dock, where fearless kids
shine God's light, will be held August 3 - 7, 2009. More to follow!!
THE SCHOOL FOR CHRISTIAN LIVING AND
SERVING
A Ministry of the Reformed Church in America, Classis of Mid-Hudson and
Orange, the School for
Christian Living and Serving serves the churches in lower Hudson
Valley. The mission of the School
is to fulfill Christ’s command to “make disciples of all
nations.” We endeavor to offer training for adults
that will deepen their faith and equip them to use the gifts God has
given them for ministry within
Christ’s Church.
The school was established in 1994 and has grown steadily since by
offering a consistent slate of
courses. At the same time, the school has remained flexible with
a spiritual ear sensitively tuned to the
clergy, laity, and ever-changing needs of congregations throughout the
area. This has resulted in an
ever-broadening range of Christian education courses offered for the
serious student and also for those
people simply seeking additional knowledge on a particular Christian
subject.
The School for Christian Living and Serving is open and available to
Christians of all denominations.
There are no academic prerequisites except for those student on a study
track to become Preaching
Elders. The school offers several learning opportunities for
adults each fall and during the winter/spring.
There are courses for Personal Growth, Christian Education to meet the
needs of people leading and
teaching Christian Education, Consistory Training, Personal Spiritual
Development, Leadership
Development, in addition to General Interest courses. We are
pleased to announce this spring’s course
offerings and invite you to prayerfully consider joining others who are
seeking to grow in their faith.
Please take time to review this spring’s courses listed on the inside
back cover of this Church News and
stop by the Information Center in the Gathering Area for full course
descriptions and additional
registration information.

Greetings
from Kermit!
I know for sure that spring is almost here, because just a few days ago
I saw one of my froggy
friends hopping across the road toward the pond. (I don’t think
he looked both ways first, but I
know he made it safely, because I heard him splash into the
pond.) I’m afraid it’s still too cold
for me, though. I guess that’s what I get for spending so much time
with you humans!
The Wednesday Morning Workshops for April will be on the 1st, 15th,
22nd and 29th, in
Room 15 at 9:30 a.m. (There’s no meeting on April 8th, because
that is Spring Vacation time!!)
There are many projects underway and ready to go, so there’s sure to be
something for YOU!!
Please join in.
The date for Take Home Kits has been changed to Mother’s Day, Sunday,
May 10th. There will be
lots of crafty kits available for you to work on. The kits are
due back just before this year’s Bazaar,
so you’ll have plenty of time to finish them! We need EVERYONE to
stop by after either service,
and pick up a kit (or maybe two!!)
Mrs. Ray (my nice human friend who is almost as happy as this frog to
see spring coming) reminds
me that we can use YOUR help to make sure we have a nice variety of
kits available. Please consider
becoming a Kit Designer. Each designer takes a craft idea, makes
a sample of that craft, writes the
directions, and assembles all the materials needed to make more of that
craft. Call Carol Ray (297-4830)
if YOU would like to help in this way. She has lots and LOTS of ideas
and catalogs to help you get
started. Also, Carol is always on the lookout for easy craft
ideas for the Wednesday Morning Workshop
folks to make.
Piggy Bank Bazaar is happy to encourage the church’s young humans to go
to an overnight church
sponsored camp like Camp Warwick or Camp Fowler during the
summer. We give what we call
“Camperships” to every child who is going to camp. Let the church
office know if your child is going
to camp this summer.
With so many supplies being used for the Take-Home Kits, Piggy’s
Cupboard has room for more
supplies. We can especially use felt, polyester stuffing, pom-poms,
basket grass like Easter grass, small
and medium size-baskets, containers for gift baskets, gifts for gift
baskets, craft wire, floral foam, floral
mosses, vases, containers that can be used for flower arrangements, hot
glue sticks, small frames for
cross stitch, Velcro, mugs, bells, paint brushes, yardsticks, rulers,
new nails, screws, washers, hooks
and such (we just got a nice donation of nails, etc., but we could use
more) and other craft supplies.
The Piggy Bank folks enjoy creating gifts from all the supplies that
are in the cupboard!
I think I’ll go and dip a flipper in the pond now, just to see if it’s
getting warm enough to take a quick
swim. I’ll be hopping by Room 15 on Wednesday though, and I hope to see
YOU there!
Yours in Love,
Kermit

STEPHEN
MINISTRY
Stephen Ministry Letter of Appreciation
My experience as a Care Receiver of the Stephen Ministry program here
at New Hackensack
Reformed Church was one I’ll always cherish and remember. It didn’t
start out that way however!
I was, I thought, open to this ministry when it was explained to me and
was eager to begin. Something
changed after I began...I was, I know now, fighting internally against
it. I thought this wasn’t for me. I felt
I couldn’t afford the time, it wasn’t for me, I didn’t need or deserve
it. I also felt I could “go it on my
own.” How wrong I was on all of it.
What I learned was that I am worth it! God loves us all and we need to
feel it especially when our lives
are hard for whatever reason. God is the closest then. There’s no
reason to “go it alone.”
There is power and strength in talking your feelings out and having
someone to share your concerns,
fears, and deepest feelings. A Stephen Minister was there for me. I’m
stronger from this experience,
knowing that God is ever close and with me each day through my
journey...whatever it may be.
